What is the Ageing Well Programme?

The Ageing Well Programme was developed by Essex County Council to better understand the challenges faced by adults with learning disabilities and/or autism as they age.

Using this learning we are seeking to shape the market to ensure these needs can be met now and in the future as more adults with learning disabilities and/or autism reach older age.

This programme is aimed at all accommodation-based care services in Essex. This includes providers of residential and supported living services for adults with learning disabilities and/or autism.

Adults will be identified by Essex County Council as meeting the criteria of ‘Ageing Well’

The Ageing Well Kite Mark has been developed by Essex County Council to demonstrate that providers have attained expected understanding and ongoing minimum standards within services.

This is measured through a mix of up-front technical questions and ongoing monitoring regarding training of staff and understanding of issues relating to adults within this cohort.

The Kite Mark will be used to differentiate between providers when seeking accommodation for adults that fall within the Ageing Well cohort and will be factored in to the decision as to where adults will be placed.

The key benefits to having the Kite Mark will be in receiving referrals for adults within the Ageing Well cohort.

For providers that operate older person’s services such as residential homes, this will mean inclusion on a preferred list of providers for placements of adults within this cohort.

For providers delivering supported living services, this will become a factor on the placement of adults within the cohort through our Supported Living Framework.

In order to attain the Kite Mark providers will need to make an application to Essex County Council.  At the outset the provider will be required to answer set questions to test understanding, and there will be ongoing monitoring (annually) to ensure that providers continue to meet the standards with respect to training and understanding.

Providers can make an application to the Council at any time to be accredited under the Ageing Well Programme by completing and returning the Ageing Well Kite Mark Questionnaire to nick.green@essex.gov.uk.
