Supported living arrangements aim to increase each individual's independence and skills by reducing dependency over a period of time. This should therefore increase the independence of the adult and reduce the amount of paid and unpaid support that they need. This enables people to try new things, allows the provision of care and support in their own homes and may support people to move-on to more independent forms of accommodation.
The provision of tenancy-based accommodation enables people with disabilities to rent their own home with security of tenure as long as they abide by the rules of their tenancy. This is in line with the Care Act (2014) and is in keeping with adults without disabilities and fits with the principles of living an ordinary life
Tenancy-based accommodation can include property rented from registered social landlords, not-for-profit and charitable landlords or through private rentals. Within tenancy based supported living options there is a commonly accepted set of principles that are defined in 'Changing Our Lives Quality of Life: Standards & Toolkit' and the Reach Principles: Essex County Council would expect that all providers of supported living (landlords and support providers) adhere to the standards and principles and can provide evidence to that effect.
