Namaste Care for Advanced Dementia

This Namaste Care 1 day course, delivered by St. Helena's Hospice educational team, is a multi-dimensional sensory program, designed to improve quality of life and enrich the lives of care home residents, in particular those living with advanced dementia. Developed in the USA, the program delivers a mixture of care and compassion, with specific activities, on a daily basis, for people with advanced dementia. 

Aim: 

To understand and develop the Namaste Care program, to be adapted and used in care homes, individual care by carers, coordinators of care, and professional facilitators, and for families with members with dementia who have difficulty communicating. 

Objectives: 

  1. Discuss and debate ‘what is Dementia, and how one is assessed
  2. Review and clarify the needs of people with dementia
  3. To identify Namaste Care
  4. To identify the benefits and challenges of providing Namaste Care
  5. Therapeutic interventions – touch/hand massage/non-pharmacological support
  6. Review how to start and sustain the program
  7. Develop and build action plans for your care home
  8. Evaluation and review

The day will consist of information presentations, and videos, activities and discussion, practical learning of a hand / foot massage and other non-pharmacological interventions, planning and review.
