Recognising Carers, Protecting Rights: Essex’s Commitment Continues
Last Thursday 20 November, Essex County Council joined the national campaign to mark Carers Rights Day 2025, raising awareness of the rights unpaid carers have and the support available to them.
There are an estimated 124,000 unpaid carers in Essex, though the true number may be far higher. Many people who care for a loved one, friend or neighbour don’t realise they are carers—or that they have legal rights to support, protection, and workplace flexibility.
This year’s theme, “Know your rights, use your rights”, encourages carers to understand and act on their entitlements. Carers have the right to:
- Information and advice
- Consultation on services
- Support for eligible needs
- Protection from discrimination
- Carer’s assessments
- Flexible working and unpaid leave
- Assessment and support for young carers
Essex County Council continues to recognise the vital role unpaid carers play in our communities. Since launching the All-Age Carers Strategy in 2022, the council has worked with carers and partners to improve support, including through enhanced social work practices and new resources like the Hospital Discharge Guide.
Support for carers is available through commissioned services such as Carers First, Action for Family Carers, and Essex Carers Support, offering emotional wellbeing support, peer groups, grants, counselling, and digital tools like Mobilise.
Councillor John Spence, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care said:
“Unpaid carers carry out an extraordinary role, often quietly and without recognition. We want every carer in Essex to know they are not alone, and that they have rights—at home, in the workplace, and in the community.
We are committed to making sure carers get the support they need, when they need it most. Whether it’s through practical guidance like our new Hospital Discharge Guide or support from our partners, help is available.”
