Flu vaccines for informal carers
You will no doubt have seen in the news that flu (influenza) cases are rising rapidly, and this winter is expected to be particularly challenging. The flu vaccination is a vital tool in reducing the spread and impact of the virus.
Informal Carers
We ask that you take proactive steps to inform informal carers that they are entitled to a free NHS flu vaccination. By doing so, you help protect both carers and the vulnerable individuals they support.
Why the vaccine matters
- Flu is serious and can be a life-threatening illness leading to thousands of deaths and hospital admissions each year.
- Dual protection. Vaccinating carers shields both the caregiver and the vulnerable person in their care by reducing illness and transmission risks.
Eligibility
You can get the free NHS flu vaccine if you:
- are aged 65 or over (including those who will be 65 by 31 March 2026)
- have certain long-term health conditions
- are pregnant
- live in a care home
- are the main carer for an older or disabled person, or receive a carer's allowance
- live with someone who has a weakened immune system
