COPD & Oxygen Awareness training for Domiciliary Care Staff

This full day training day is aimed at staff who are involved in the day to day care of individuals with a chronic lung condition and/or those prescribed with Oxygen and will cover:

Introductin to COPD -
  • What is COPD
    • The impact of COPD in England
    • Symptoms of COPD
    • Causes of COPD
    • Diagnosing COPD

    Detecting Breathing Problems
    • Long standing or persistent symptoms
    • MRC dyspnoea scale
    • Clinical features differentiating Asthma and COPD
    • Existing treatments
    • Managing stable and unstable COPD

    Keeping Well with COPD

    Oxygen Awareness
    • Statutory and Regulatory Obligations
    • Understanding of relevant legislation and codes of practice
    • What is a Medical Gas
    • Familiarity with the composition and identification of various gases
    • Hazards of Medical Gases

    Health and Safety
    • Understanding of the dangers involved in working with medical gases
    • Familiarity with safe operating practices

    Clinical use of Medical Gases
    • Understanding of the different types of medical gas supplies,
    • the associated equipment
    • safe working practices

    Guidance on how to handle, move and where relevant, store medical gas cylinders safely
    • How to identify faulty and incident cylinders and take appropriate action
    • How to prepare a medical gas cylinder for use and its connection to equipment
    • Risk Assessments and Practical Session
    • Be aware of risk assessments with regard to storage and use of oxygen
    • Practical session includes face mask and nasal cannula.
